(Updated) 1.3/Portfolio Panels & 1.2 Visual Arts Picasso/Tawhiao & Series of Work Sequence

During Art Term 2, after researching Tracy Tawhiao and Picasso and their art style, I have been connecting parts of their art style with my values or art style by drawing and painting aspects of their art and a mix of mine as well.

One of the art aspects I got from Tracy Tawhiao to my art is subversion. I did this by getting a newspaper, painting almost everything but leaving some words and images behind, and creating a new sentence and meaning. Meanwhile, I got to connect Picasso’s Art to my art by applying just basic colors with not too much depth in my art as we can see in the scale, which isn’t colored with a lot of depth but simple color while the subversion sentence I made in my art which is “on co-government has work to do” along with some of the images shown represents what’s currently happening in our time, such as wars happening in some countries.

And of course, how I applied my values in my art was a balanced scale, a clock, and some hands. The clock in my art represents equality, and the clock represents time as the hands at the side of my art represent how some are seeking, striving, and reaching for the time/period of equality as the scale which is equality and the clock which represents time altogether represents the time of equality.

I’ve then been learning about the principles of art finding what aspects some arts have in it, we’ve also been doing some thumbnail sketches to locate them.

An example of them is a balanced element, which means that there is a balanced amount of lighting and shadows in the art, not higher or smaller than the other, and High key lighting which is when there is massive lighting overwhelming the image, having little shadows, and low key lighting is when there is more shadows/dark than lighting.

What I’ve also been doing after creating this is then trying to photograph things that are related to my values as what I chose for this is a guitar, scale, and shoe for. Then I started photoshopping them and I changed their settings of them such as the lighting, colors, saturation, blend, definition, and sharpness.

I then afterward did up to 2 observation drawings of a photo that I have photoshopped, first making up to 6 planned-out thumbnail sketches I may do in my finished work and a list of things I may want to apply such as cross-hatching for example. I’ve then been making observational drawings but painting and adding newspapers to them, applying a bit of subversion to the art, and also doing it based on cubism.

We have also been taking practice shots & getting used to the camera functions before starting the real shot:

After all of this, I made them all into an art sequence panel

Panel 1:

I’ve then started making my panel 2 by applying to make more photos from 1.3. 1.3 is where I did an option to research a photographer of my choice, along with drawing thumbnail sketches and what I’ve observed based on their artworks. I then did my own photos based on what I observed from my photographer’s photos, and afterward, photoshopped them. When I was making my panel 2, I’ve also added photos back from panel 1, except now splitting and cutting them into separate parts. Then, placing them in different places from where they were originally, and applying more subversion into it. I then after that tried to apply more of some of the aspects of Tracy Tawhiao and Picasso by applying some newspaper to more of my art, as well as putting some Maori symbols in reference to what Tracy Tawhiao did to hers.

After this, I also applied a style from the artist Jean Michel Basquiat, which focuses on a graffiti-like style to his art, and similar to Tracy Tawhiao, he also tends to cover his art into layers, covering his original art and turning it into something new.

School Holiday

During English, we are been writing about one moment we are grateful for during the holidays (describing, who with and what we did), three things or activities we did to get out of the house, what did I do for myself that made us happy (well being included), and what I’m looking forward for this term.

The one moment that I had in the holidays that I’m grateful for is being able to hang out with my friends and family around the days I had had no activities whatsoever during my days as the three activities I did and enjoyed to get out of the house was doing a sleepover with my friends and siblings as we played games such as uno or chess, and also traveled around places such as timezone and ice skating.

Some of the things I did do during the holidays for myself that kept me away from Bordom were watching in a phone around Instagram or youtube, learning more about chess and basic practices and tactics, cleaning up the house, or sleeping when I really had nothing to do, this improved my mental and physical well being.

The things I’m looking forward to this term are gaining more credits, meeting up and studying again with my classmates, and having hometime after school.

During our three days back at school, we have been either catching up with work, being introduced to the new topic we’re going to learn this term, or fixing our failed test, and have been writing down our goals for this year.

One of the things we did in our three days back at school is writing down our holidays, the benefits of holidays for students, teachers, and parents, and the challenges of having holidays. I also did art, which we are now doing the practical test of our work from last term, in Math, learning about trigonometry and aspects of it that we need to learn, and science, where we are now going to learn about genetics and test being fixed for some who failed from last term.

The goals I have for this year are being able to reach at least up or more than 80 credits, and passing my literacy and math credits.

 

Content and Subject Matter

During Art, we have been learning about Content and Subject Matter as we have been learning their definition, and how they differentiate from each other despite their close similarities with each other, and after that brainstorming the possible Content and Subject Matter we may have in our Artwork.

Subject Matter is the object the artwork is trying to show and portray to you. An example of Subject Matter when there are trees around the painting, that is the Subject matter of the painting.

Subject Matter and Content are both pretty similar to each other, Content is a bit more complex than Subject Matter as Content is the reason why the artist portrayed the specific Subject Matter in the art, what it is trying to tell you.

An example of Content is Tracy Tawhiao painting Well Blood you see at the back of the painting aside from the fish, you can see some Moari languages placed there, which is the Subject Matter. But, while this is true, the reason and content of Tracy Tawhiao’s work, is to show an act of colonization on Moari, as they used the fish covering the words to help define that.

As for my Art, the Subject Matter I can add to my art is a scale, different cultures such as people, languages, symbols, and backgrounds/environment as the content behind it are based on equality, despiting differences from one thing to another.

Series and Sequences

During art, we have been going through pieces of art and have been thinking of scaling what order we should place that art, creating a hierarchy of those pieces, from first to last.

Here’s the order I came within the mine (Starts from the top left corner to the bottom right corner):

Why I chose this order as my Hierarchy because I wanted to first off introduce the topic, using the simple and basic picture of the topic I’m using I also included the drawing versions next to them, and as we start going down the left side and bottom, we will see the picture starting to try different poses, lighting, and angles of the topic as at the bottom was the final work which was transitioned.

Figurative Language

During English, we have been learning about different types of figurative languages and their definitions.

What we discussed were similes, metaphors, alliterations, personifications, Hyperbole,  and onomatopoeia. Similars are comparing two words or more using like or as, such as the forest was green as a leaf, metaphors are similar to similes but instead of using like or as, makes the word become what it is simlar to but is not, such as the gorilla was a sturdy tank, alliterations are when a certain sound repeat, such as the traveller travelled on the train, personifications are when live aspect is given to a object or thing, such as the plant rised up slowly, hyperboles are saying something more exageratting than it actually is, such as I screamed louder than a lion, and lastly onomatopoeia, which is using words which sound exactly what you are describing, such as the racket wisttled through the wind as it was swinged.

The ones that are most useful and something you may be using most of the time in your writing is simile as most of the time, you will be decribing lots of things as simile will help you make what you are describing more realistic and believable, another one is Hyperbole, it doesn’t really tell you exactly the accurate thing but this can also help people tell what you are talking about as you can use these in your writing, especially if you’re decribing something.

During Art, after finishing our research about Tracy Tawhiao and Picasso along with the comparison between them, we have now been bringing them all together and brainstorming what ideas we’ve gotten from their style of art and perspective and a connection between my own ideas and theirs based on my research of them.

What I know:

My Ideas:

I make art based on a connection to real life, as my art focuses on human anatomy. I also create my art mainly based on simple shapes as I use them to build each other up, making something detailed and stand out a lot.

Picasso’s Guitar Series:

Creates his art based on modernity and the vivid human image as he uses an art style known as Synthetic Cubism which is an art style that relies on three simple characteristics which is little to no depth, simple shapes, and bright colors. The materials that Picasso used in his art is newspaper, sawdust, and sand.

Tracy Tawhiao Newspaper works:

Creates her art with aspects of Maori culture or others and also makes her art combined with different types of culture, she also does her art focused mainly on subversion which is covering the original meaning and turning it into a new meaning as she used subversion in some of her art as a form of colonization in the Moari as the materials she uses in her art are a newspaper.

 

What I think could happen next:

My Ideas:

I will still continue making my art based on simple shapes as I slowly build them all up together and I could also try not only connecting my art with just in real life but also some aspects of culture along with it.

I might try creating my art with newspaper and using synthetic cubism which uses simple characteristics of art such as simple shapes, not too much depth, and bright colors.

Tracy Tawhiao Newspaper works:

I may apply subversion to my art, meaning covering the original narrative or meaning of the art while making something new.

During English, we have been continuing on researching the Happy Broadcast and some of its quotes as we also find what we see interesting about it and how this can help benefit the world.

One thing I found about the Happy broadcast is that a certain specie of giant tortoise was believed by others to be extinct for more than a hundred years as it was later discovered around the Galapagos Islands.

What I found interesting about this article was the fact they were finally discovered after a hundred years despite many believing that it was extinct and how this may be able to help the world is that this may also open up and spread new knowledge and possibilities all around all researchers and scientists.

What I found interesting about this quote is that the biggest fall may happen in CO2 since World War 2 and how this news may have a positive impact on the world is that this may give relief to those who were suffering or experiencing hardships from this.

During Art, I have been researching the definition of Trompe I’oeil and making a comparison between Tracy Tawhiao and Picasso.

If you do not know what Trompe L’oeil is, Trompe L’oeil, which in French is “to deceive the eye”, is an art style and an art historical tradition, which is based on illusions, fooling many people into thinking it is the real thing as Trompe L’oeil is an art style that can make many people question themselves the difference between the painted reality and ours.

The origin of Trompe L’eoil began during the earliest days of Trompe L’eoil came from ancient Greek, when a contest was held by two artists who used Trompe L’eoil, Parrhasius, and Zeuxis.

The paintings that these two artists made during the time were first off curtains, made by Parrhasius, which was an illusion art that fooled and tricked many people whole Zeuxis, who painted grapes, which looked realistic enough for even birds who even attempted to eat them, fooled by its realistic look as these two artists have fooled many kinds of people, even fellow artists as this style were later on passed to many generations as artists are being encouraged and convinced paint how their classical predecessors did as even today, Trompe L’eoil nowadays is still being used by many artists.

The first comparison between Tracy Tawhiao and Picasso is that Tracy Tawhiao’s art is mainly based on subversion which is covering the original meaning and turning it into a new meaning, while Picasso, his art is based on a few aspects, one which is very known for Picasso which is Cubism as he was the one who helped invent this which cubism is an art style that presents the vivid human image, his other art styles are based on modernity, Picasso also uses basic aspects of art into his painting such as simple shapes, colors, and not too much depth into them, while Tracy Tawhiao uses aspects of culture into her art as Moari is one of them while she also can mix them up with other cultures, she also adds cultural references such as symbols and motifs.

The common and similar aspects Tracy Tawhiao and Picasso have each other is that, just like Tracy Tawhiao, Picasso also uses Newspaper in his art, they both also give both their art a simple vibe to it as they both apply simple shapes to their art, but they do this, they are also leaving an abstract and deep meaning behind them.

How Tracy Tawhiao and Picasso use Trompe L’eoil is that Picasso, despite not using in-depth or detailed shapes and colors, makes his art similar and relatable to real life as he uses inspiration from what is around him such as the background and materials and places it into his art as he also makes them look 3 dimensional by applying shades around their art. Tracy Tawhiao meanwhile, uses aspects of culture that were going on or some past events in real life, putting it into her art like Picasso, Tracy Tawhiao makes her art relatable and a connection with it in real life as Tracy Tawhiao uses the history of Moari along with other cultures as she adds their backgrounds and culture in her art while adding more meaning to it (Using Subversion) by covering it with a different culture, giving it a relatable connection to not only in real life but also in some past events that occurred.
